How Do Doctors Diagnose Gestational diabetes

Blood tests are used to diagnose gestational diabetes. The glucose challenge test, the oral glucose tolerance test, or both may be conducted. These tests evaluate your body's glucose utilisation.

Glucose Challenge Test
You may first undergo the glucose challenge test. This blood test is also known as the glucose screening test. A healthcare professional will draw your blood one hour after you consume a sweet liquid containing glucose for this test. You are not required to fast before this test. Fasting entails abstaining from all food and drink except water. If your blood glucose level is 140 or higher, you may need to return for a fasting oral glucose tolerance test. If your blood glucose level is greater than 200, you may have type 2 diabetes.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)
The OGTT measures blood glucose after a minimum 8-hour fast. A medical professional will draw your blood first. Then, you will consume the glucose-containing liquid. A doctor will need to draw your blood every hour for two to three hours to diagnose gestational diabetes.

You have gestational diabetes if you have high blood glucose levels at any two or more of the following blood test times: fasting, 1 hour, 2 hours, or 3 hours.
