Protecting
People with Diabetes from Influenza A Virus Subtype H3N2: Importance of
Vaccination and Hygiene.
Influenza A virus subtype H3N2 can cause serious illness in
people with diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition that weakens the immune
system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. This means that
people with diabetes are more susceptible to getting the flu and are more
likely to experience complications.
Complications from the flu in people with diabetes can
include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and ear infections. These
complications can be severe and may require hospitalization. In some cases, the
flu can also lead to worsening of sugar control.
To reduce the risk of getting the flu, people with diabetes
should get an annual flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is safe and effective and can
reduce the risk of getting the flu by up to 60%. It is especially important for
people with diabetes to get vaccinated because of their increased risk for
complications. Masking if symptomatic and self-monitoring of pulse and
oxygen are useful.
In addition to getting vaccinated, people with diabetes
should also practice good hygiene to reduce the risk of getting the flu. This
includes washing hands frequently, avoiding close contact with people who are
sick, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
If someone with diabetes does get the flu, it is important
to seek medical attention promptly. Antiviral medications can help reduce the
severity and duration of the illness and may also help prevent complications.
It is also important to monitor blood sugar levels closely and to stay
hydrated.
